FCJ Refugee Center is Inspiring this Year's Cohort of the Speaking Rights Movement

This year's edition of the National Speaking Rights movement has begun with a three day training in Gibsons, British Columbia. Participants are getting inspired by the FCJ Refugee Center's recent Same Difference Community Action Project.

Building on the skills and interests of the youth at FCJ such as video, art, spoken word and workshops, FCJ made a video surrounding the idea of identity of newcomers and immigrant with precarious status. They then used this video during an hour long interactive workshop. Today, we examined this project and how it is contributing to achieving goal number 11 of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) - building sustainable cities and communities. The SDGs are series of objectives developed by UN member states to promote long lasting peace and well-being all over the world.

Over the course of this year, participants in this training will be developing their own Community Action Project based on the issues ad interests identified by youth. They will also work to identify the ways in which making changes in their communities contributes to achieving global goals for ending poverty, improving health and education, and reducing inequalities.
